The alternator charges the battery, which powers many things, including the headlights. Dimming headlights are the last link in a chain reaction that starts with a bad alternator. If the alternator can’t keep the battery charged, the battery can’t send enough power to the headlights. The headlights will then dim or flicker because they do not have enough power to stay fully illuminated.
